How to install Skype in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Quick installation by command line:

Install Skype on Ubuntu 32bit:
wget -O skype.deb http://download.skype.com/linux/skype-ubuntu_4.0.0.8-1_i386.deb
sudo apt-get install libxss1; sudo dpkg -i skype.deb
sudo apt-get -f install && rm skype.deb

Install Skype on Ubuntu 64bit:
wget -O skype.deb http://download.skype.com/linux/skype-ubuntu_4.0.0.8-1_amd64.deb
sudo apt-get install libxss1 lib32stdc++6 lib32asound2 ia32-libs libc6-i386 lib32gcc1; sudo dpkg -i skype.deb
sudo apt-get -f install && rm skype.deb

Alternatively with the Synaptic Package Manager: Please see the following steps.

Step 1: 
Install Synaptic Package Manager

You can use to the Ubuntu Software Center to do so. Search for "Synaptic Package Manager" and install it. sudo apt-get install synaptic

Step 2: 
Install Skype with Synaptic Package Manager

Start the Synaptic Package Manager. Press "Reload" to update the package information. When the update is completed, search for Skype. Mark Skype for installation (right mouse button) and press "Apply" to perform the installation. sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install skype

Step 3: 
Start, test and configure Skype

You can start Skype with the HUD menu (corner top left) by typing skype. Now you can login to Skype. After login you can test your microphone and speakers with a test call ("Echo / Sound Test Service"). If you want to test your webcam, you can do it under the options. Select "Options" from the Skype menu button (bottom left) and choose "Video Devices". skype
